A Tale of Two Plays

Comparing Structured & Free Play

Dear SweetPlay Grown-Ups:

Thank you for sharing your little ones with us – we’re so grateful to have you as part of the SweetPlay family! Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, family member, or babysitter, you’re the real MVPs, and we couldn’t do what we do without you.

To show our appreciation, we offer $1 admission for all grown-up guests, every single day!

You’re always welcome to relax while your kids play, with plenty of cozy seating and even massage chairs to help you unwind. Or better yet – jump in and play alongside them! Rediscover your inner child and make memories together on our fun, safe play structures and interactive zones.

A Tale of Two Plays: Free vs Structured Play (and why kids need both)

Children thrive when they have a healthy balance of both structured and unstructured play. Each type offers unique benefits to their development—and together, they create a well-rounded play experience.

Structured play involves set rules, goals, or guidance from an adult—think organized games, sports, or planned activities. It helps kids learn how to follow directions, work within a team, and develop specific skills.

Unstructured play, often called free play, is when kids get to decide what they want to do and how they want to do it. Whether they’re pretending to be superheroes, building forts, or just exploring a play space, this kind of play gives children the freedom to use their imaginations, follow their own interests, and express themselves creatively.

Free play can happen solo or with friends. When children play together without a script, they learn how to share, compromise, solve problems, and build social confidence—all through simple, spontaneous fun.

The Play Options are Endless at SweetPlay!

At SweetPlay, we believe in the power of both types of play. Our open-ended play zones give kids the freedom to explore, create, and imagine on their own terms.  Meanwhile our guided group activities included in our Summer Camps and events offer just the right amount of structure to help them build skills and confidence. Whether they’re navigating obstacle courses or inventing their own games with friends, every visit offers a little bit of both worlds—fun with purpose.
